Last month 30 Explorers from local Fire, EMS and Law Enforcement Posts were given the opportunity to participate in hands-on activities for different emergency services careers at Greenwich Scouting’s Explorer Day at Seton Scout Reservation.

Volunteers from Greenwich Emergency Medical Services (GEMS), Glenville Volunteer Fire Company and Greenwich Police worked side by side with participants during staged scenarios they may encounter in the field. Simulations included canine search and rescue, vehicle extrication and casualties, and the Incident Command System.

Explorer Day is an annual event that exposes all Explorers to the different emergency services careers. “This is the first time in many years that we have had Explorer Day with all three Posts,” said Greenwich Police Chief, Jim Heavey. “If they pursue these fields they will inevitably have to work together.”

Beginning in 1935, the Boy Scouts of America Exploring program has provided young men and women ages 10-20 with the opportunity to learn about a variety of career fields and network with professionals already working in those fields.  Popular Explorer Posts include Culinary, Business, Communications, Fire and EMS and Law Enforcement.
