The following statement was issued by the Greenwich Fire Dept. at 5:00pm on Monday

At approximately 1:55 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2016, Greenwich Fire Department units were assigned to respond to a possible fire in a structure at #4 Windsor Ln. in the Cos Cob neighborhood of Greenwich.

Firefighters arrived at approximately 2:00 p.m. and encountered a fire in the garage with a heavy smoke condition throughout the single-family raised ranch style home, with bystanders reporting a possible trapped occupant.

The firefighters began an immediate search and were able to locate and remove a female from the first floor of the structure. Once removed from the home, firefighters administered CPR in the front yard until the patient was turned over to Greenwich Emergency Medical Service personnel. The female victim was transported to Stamford Hospital where she passed away. The State of Connecticut Medical Examiner is in the process of identifying the victim and the determining the cause of death.

Approximately 50 firefighters responded and remained at the scene for about three hours. The area of origin was in the garage but the cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Greenwich and State Fire Marshals.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
