Former Chief of Police for the Greenwich Police Department died on May 1 at age 85 surround-ed by his loving wife Ann and family. Raymond Eugene Grant Jr. was born March 24, 1932 to the late Sophia and Raymond Eugene Grant.
He was a graduate of Stamford High School and Norwalk Community College.
Ray began his career in 1950 at the Connecticut Power Company in Stamford. He proudly served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1952 to 1954.
Appointed to the Greenwich Police Department in 1955, he rose through the ranks, culminating in 1977 with his promotion to Chief of Police, a position he held until he retired in 1983.
As one of the original founders in 1958 of the Greenwich Police Silver Shield Association, he was dedicated to community service and outreach. He maintained membership in the
International Association of Chiefs of Police, Connecticut Police Chiefs Association and Fairfield County Chiefs of Police.
He transitioned into the private sector in 1983 as the first Corporate Security Manager at Pitney Bowes. In 1991, he was promoted to Director of Corporate Security, where his area of responsi-bility extended worldwide.
He was an active member and former Connecticut State Commander of Veterans of Underage Military Service.
His joys in life were his wife of 63 years, spending time with his eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, daily visits to Tod’s Point and cheering for the New York Yankees and UConn Women’s Basketball. He also enjoyed working in the garden and riding his three horses at his vacation home in Hebron, NY.
Ray is survived by his wife, Ann Marie Grant (nee Walther), his daughters Kathleen (Robert) Weil of Seal Beach, CA, Linda (Anthony) Marini of Greenwich and son Timothy (Elizabeth) Grant of Cranston, RI. He is predeceased by his sister, Doris Considine and his brother, Frank Grant.
A wake will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2017 from 4:00pm-8:o0 pm at Thomas M. Gallagher Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Ave, Stamford. Tel (203)-359-9999. A funeral service will be held on May 5, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Clement’s of Rome Church, 535 Fairfield Ave. Stamford. Interment to follow at Putnam Cemetery.
