Riverside Service is again partnering with Greenwich Police this holiday season to offer Greenwich residents a safe way home.
“Last year we towed a few people who took advantage of the program,” said Albert Jagodzinski, owner of Riverside Service. “That’s alright. The idea is we don’t want you to drink and drive.”
If a Greenwich resident is not sober to drive, they can contact the Greenwich Police Department’s Non-Emergency number (203) 622-8004 to make arrangements for a ride home from Riverside Service, including a free vehicle tow.
The offer begins Saturday, Nov 14 and runs through Jan 2, 2021.
“People who call Greenwich Police and you’re not comfortable driving, then GPD will dispatch one of Riverside Service to come and tow you and your car home,” Jagodzinski said, adding that his drivers are carefully adhering to Covid protocols, including wearing masks and gloves.
“Also our trucks are sanitized every shift,” he added.
“I’m hoping that it catches on a little more, and I’m hoping that other companies that do what I do will expand this across the country,” Jagodzinski said.
Nov 25 was George Chelwick’s birthday and he turned 95.
The event was marked by a car parade of longtime friends some veterans, led by Greenwich Police officers on motorcycles.

When George turned 18, after graduating Greenwich High School, he was inducted into the Army Air Force.
He had wanted to be a fighter pilot. He entered the service in March 1944. D-Day was June 1944. The 18-year-old boys in George’s class in the Army Air Force were told there wasn’t a need for pilots. Instead went through different tests to determine his placement and ended up being part of the Ground Control Approach, stationed in Manila in the Philippines.
Ground Control Approach, or GCA for short, was a service provided by air-traffic controllers where they guided aircraft to a safe landing, including in poor weather conditions, based on primary radar images.

George and his wife Nancy celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year. The couple have three sons.
George volunteered with the Boy Scouts for over 50 years. He was also a member of the RMA and president of the Byram Rotary.
But what many know George best for is his years volunteering to film Greenwich High School football games, which he did from 1970-2012, filming a total of about 500 games from Boston to Florida.
A couple dozen cars showed up on Wednesday to wish George a happy birthday.
One driver held up a simple poster that said it all with, “America’s Finest.”
The last two cars of the parade were Police Chief Jim Heavey and his son James, who is home from Northeastern University in Boston, where he is an international affairs major and part of ROTC.
Happy birthday, George!

While we take time to celebrate Thanksgiving holidays with our immediate families, let us pause and reflect on where we are as a school district and where we are going through these strange times. We have much to be thankful for this year.
We are very thankful that we were able to open our schools to our students this year and meaningfully improve remote learning for those who chose that option.
We are thankful for our Superintendent and her team for providing stable leadership and for the parents, teachers and community that supported these efforts.
We are also thankful for the partnership with the Greenwich Department of Health, who have been with us every step of the way. Most of all we are thankful for our students who have adapted to the new protocols and continue to bring us their excitement, energy and enthusiasm every day.
There is plenty of uncertainty in the world, but we are doing our best to ensure that quality local education is a constant. While some changes were necessary for health and safety, great strides have been made to continue to provide opportunities for our students to grow.
We learned from our early experiences this spring and we continue to adapt and improve the offering for all of our students. Beyond that, there is also a focus on supporting the social and emotional needs of all of our students.
Even in this dark hour we can begin to see the light at the end of this tunnel, with multiple vaccines on the horizon. We look forward to a return to normal with all of our students back in classrooms, on fields and participating in all of the other activities we’ve missed in the past several months.
Like the students, we truly miss being in the schools and the special energy that comes from being in a classroom where teaching and learning is happening – where teachers are making those connections and enabling the students to truly access the content.
Please be safe during this holiday season. Each of us can play a role in protecting our schools and our community.
We hope you all enjoy the holiday and we thank you for your continued support of the Greenwich Public Schools.

Children’s Learning Centers announced that they are the recipients of a $200,000 grant from Bank of America, through its “Neighborhood Builders” program.
As an awardee, they receive a grant, plus a year of leadership training for Marc Jaffe, the Executive Director, as well as an emerging leader within CLC. Additionally, they will join a network of peer organizations across the US with the opportunity to access capital to expand their impact.

CLC is the second largest provider of early education and care in Connecticut.
CLC typically serves nearly 1,000 children daily, 87% of whom are considered low-income.
As COVID-19 protocols have increased expenses, the Neighborhood Builders funds will be used to support operational costs including PPE for teachers. It will also be used in developing a Blended Pre-K model (distance learning) with a central goal of family engagement while also providing operating flexibility during the pandemic. This will help CLC continue their vision of building a just future where every child and family thrives because of early childhood education.

“America’s early childhood system was fragile and operated on razor thin margins prior to the pandemic. Now extended closures and increased operating costs due to COVID-19 coupled with reduced capacity is pushing the early childhood system that working parents rely on, to the brink of collapse,” said Marc Jaffe in a release. “The Neighborhood Builders grant will have a tremendous impact on CLC and the children we serve and will allow us to continue our mission. Thank you, Bank of America, for your partnership!”
Thanksgiving dinner for hundreds of children is a signature event at the Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich.
Last year was the Club’s 17th annual feast.
A small crew of Boys &Girls Club staff, Board members and local officials were on hand to help with the distribution of Thanksgiving meals in a drive-thru format. Nov 24, 2020 Photo: Leslie Yager
The children look forward to the tradition all year, and eat their meals among friends at boisterous communal tables peppered by local officials and Greenwich Police officers. It’s one big, happy family.
In fact, the event draws so many volunteers that they have to take turns serving the children turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, gravy and the “3 green bean minimum.”
None of that was possible this year.
In fact, since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Club has had to reinvent its role in the community.
Interviewed by phone earlier in the week, Boys & Girls Club CEO Cristina Vittoria, who started in her new position in the middle of the pandemic on July 1, said the Club shut down last March when schools closed and carefully transitioned to a limited in-person experience.
Vittoria said since reopening in June with a modified summer at Camp Simmons and the Clubhouse Camp, rather than a walk-in model, the Club switched to a registration model.

“In the fall, we knew families needed after school support, so we opened up our whole facility for after school care. The children still take the bus, but they have to register,” she explained.
“We used to be open for everyone,” Vittoria added. “What we’re finding is we’re taking fewer kids, but they’re coming very regularly. These are the kids who need us the most.”
Also, she said the Club modified both the way children are grouped and the rooms they gather in. They added temperature checks, mask checks and follow up for incidents of absenteeism.
“These were all the things the schools were doing because they came straight from school to here,” Vittoria said.
For children who register for evening programs like chess club or coding classes, Vittoria said since they come to the Club from their homes, each child is checked as they enter the building.
“And we haven’t had parents in the building,” she added. “The model is they do drop off at the front desk. That’s the furthest parents come, in order to keep staff and kids safe.”
The Club has prioritized their limited space for children of essential workers and parents who have to work outside the home and don’t have other options.
Cristina Vittoria
It was with that attention to safety and limited numbers that the Club hosted an improvised 18th annual Thanksgiving in the form of a drive-thru dinner pick up for about 100 families.
Each child went home with a turkey dinner for five family members, including sides, corn bread, a pie and sparkling apple cider.
There were masks. There was social distancing. There were smiling eyes from behind masks.
As children departed the Club for the day, each was escorted to their ride home by one of the limited volunteers, including Greenwich Schools Superintendent Dr. Toni Jones, Greenwich Police Chief James Heavey, First Selectman Fred Camillo, and Greenwich Fire Dept Chief Joseph McHugh.

Vittoria said the Club also provides a space for high schoolers to participate in remote learning at Greenwich High School.
“They can do remote learning here all day,” she said. “When they announced the GHS hybrid, with two days in the building and three remote, we opened the Club house during the day to each of the cohorts for each of their days not on campus.”
Over 20 teens signed up.
“The crazy part of it is our numbers have fluctuated because of quarantines,” Vittoria said. “We’ll have kids out two weeks because their class is quarantined.”
“It’s great to see these kids in the building every day and their parents are appreciative that we’re open and we’re committed to staying open as long as we can and its safe, and we’re in lockstep with the schools.”
– Cristina Vittoria, Boys & Girls Club of Greenwich CEO
In addition to offering a space for remote learning and after school programs for children who register in advance, the Club is also providing virtual programs for children who can’t get to the Club.
This includes after school enrichment, Greenwich United Way Reading Champions, Bridge to Success and other programs that are more about character development, including Passport to Manhood, Smart Girls and Club Fit.
“The biggest area that needed support for our programs and virtual clubs have been our teens,” Vittoria said. “They’re really missing that interaction at school. We’ve seen our teen membership increase with evening programs with Torch Club and Keystone Club.”
“This is an incredibly fulfilling job,” Vittoria said. “I bounce out of bed waiting to come to work every morning.”
Greenwich’s own Joe Kaliko, founder of Needs Clearing House, has been honored by the city of Bridgeport in a unique way.
Kaliko, who many know for his fundraisers to help the homeless and relieve the burdens of those in dire straits, one at a time, is having a street in Bridgeport named after him.
Joseph J. Kaliko Way, the new name for John St from its intersection with Water Street to its intersection with Fairfield Ave in Bridgeport, is being designated with appropriate signage in recognition of Kaliko’s efforts.
In October Bridgeport’s City Council adopted resolution#156-19 noting that Kaliko had distinguished himself with his passion for public service.
Kaliko was honored by Mayor Joseph Ganim and the Bridgeport City Council for his extraordinary community service, longstanding dedication and generous contribution to those in need.
The resolution noted that people know they can turn to Kaliko when they need help, whether it be sourcing sheets for local shelters, beds for people facing emergency relocation, funds for a major surgery, assistance for animals – or even pizza for the hungry.
“Joseph Kaliko has never lost sight of the plight of the homeless and regularly helps those that go to John Street under Route 8/Route 25 overpass in downtown Bridgeport to get clothes, soap, toothpaste, clothing and food,” the City Council said in their resolution.
Further, the resolution noted that in this time of the Covid-19 pandemic, Kaliko continues to protect the homeless by getting them off the streets and into hotels.
He also feeds front line workers throughout the City of Bridgeport, ensuring meals are sent to Bridgeport Hospital, St Vincent’s Medical Center and Bridgeport Police Dept.

Best Friends Animal Society is a leading national animal welfare organization dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in America’s shelters. In addition to running lifesaving programs in partnership with more than 3,100 animal welfare groups across the country, Best Friends has lifesaving centers in New York City, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Salt Lake City, and operates the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. Founded in 1984, Best Friends is a pioneer in the no-kill movement and has helped reduce the number of animals killed in shelters nationwide from an estimated 17 million per year to around 625,000. That means there are still more than 1,700 dogs and cats killed every day in shelters, just because they don’t have safe places to call home. We are determined to bring the country to no-kill by the year 2025. Working collaboratively with shelters, rescue groups, other organizations and you, we will end the killing and Save Them All. To check out our pet lifesaving dashboard and for more information, visit bestfriends.org.
Greenwich Police arrested a Greenwich woman on Nov 10 on an outstanding warrant for Faiure to Drive in Proper Lane and Evading Responsibility.

Forget the shuttle buses, lines and booties for touring Antiquarius homes in years past.
Greenwich Historical Society’s Antiquarius House Tour can be enjoyed from the comfort of participants’ homes thanks to a collaboration between three of Greenwich’s most talented interior designers and Quintessence At Home.
Susanna Salk, co-founder of the dynamic design firm will interview Charlotte Barnes, Heather Georges and Patrick Mele for an intimate look at what makes these homes special and ready for entertaining at a moment’s notice.
“The wow factor will be every bit as evident this year and frankly we’re confident it will be an even richer experience since participants will hear first-hand the designers’ thought process and inspiration for the decor,” said Cai Pandolfino, Historical Society Director of Communications, Strategy and Business Development.
Charlotte Barnes’ Tips for Hosting the Holidays at Home
Known for creating elegant, warm and intimate spaces, Charlotte’s award-winning work has been featured in top interior design publications in the US and Europe. She shares holiday entertaining tips:
• Always set a lavish table even if dinner is casual. I believe the best tables are a mix of different colors and patterns, and I like to use a beautiful cloth as a backdrop. I am all about mixing my collections of silver and gold with old and new pieces. I like to call it ‘traditional but not.’ When you buy what you love, you will always find a place for it!
• Be sure to have your favorite food and drink on hand (in excess!) so you can entertain at a moment’s notice. Our favorite cheese is Pierre Robert at room temperature and lots of William Poll potato chips — they are amazing.
• Find a drink that is easy to make and serve. I like Lillete with an orange slice and a sprig of rosemary. It is festive and delicious and has become something that our guests look forward to every year.
• Start collecting presents throughout the year so you can have more time with family when they arrive. And get those presents wrapped early!
Antiquarius Virtual House Tours, presented by Quintessence, takes place on December 3.
Following a long-standing tradition, Antiquarius ticket holders can join friends for a festive lunch at select Greenwich restaurants.
On Friday Nov 20, around 7:00pm Greenwich police arrested a Stamford man by warrant after he turned him self in at Greenwich Police headquarters.
Police say back in October, Antonio Llanos-Lopez, 48, of Stamford had been in a motor vehicle with another subject on Riverside Ave in Riverside when he got into a physical fight with that person in the car.
During the altercation, Llanos-Lopez was accused of preventing the other subject from getting out of the car, threatening to kill the person with a machete and then wrongfully taking some of their possessions, which were later recovered by investigators.
Llanos-Lopez was charged with Unlawful Restraint 2, Threatening 2, Breach of Peace 2 and Larceny 6.
He was able to post 10% cash of his $5,000 bond and was assigned a date in Stamford Superior Court on Dec 30, 2020.
On Monday, Nov 23 Greenwich Police officers were detailed to the northern section of town on a report of a possibly intoxicated male that broke a door within the residence.
Police say the male subject was subsequently located and it was determined he was the aggressor.
On scene investigation and witness testimony revealed that the offender, Oliver Gunn, 34, of New York City, was involved in a verbal argument with the victim and broke a lock on the victim’s bedroom door. During the process Gunn refused to be fingerprinted or photographed.
He was charged with Disorderly Conduct and Failure to Comply with Fingerprint Requirements.
His bond was set at $1500 and he was assigned a date in Stamford Superior Court the next available day, Nov 24.

The First Congregational Church tree & wreath sale will take place weekends beginning Saturday, November 28 through December 6 (while supplies last) at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT (across from Binney Park)
First Church volunteers offer a selection of trees and wreaths at the Charity Christmas Tree Sale.
The First Congregational Church tree & wreath sale will take place weekends beginning Saturday, November 28 through December 6 (while supplies last) at First Congregational Church, 108 Sound Beach Avenue, Old Greenwich, CT (across from Binney Park)
The sale will feature 500 fresh cut Fraser and Balsam fir trees from New Hampshire and over 200 balsam wreaths and roping.
What is most important about this event is that ALL PROCEEDS BENEFIT LOCAL CHARITIES.
This year the beneficiaries are Kids in Crisis, Children’s Learning Center, Inspirica, Mothers for Others, Pacific House (young adult program), and First Church Fund to Benefit New Covenant Center Soup Kitchen.
The sale is a true community event. Over 100 volunteers work at the sale and include church members, friends from the community, representatives of the agencies supported by the proceeds and even the Greenwich High School Freshman Football Team.
The boys have used their muscle in previous years to unload the 500 trees when they are delivered to the church.
More details are available on the church’s website.
According to the CT Department of Labor’s report released earlier this month, Connecticut ranked 50th in job growth in 2019—dead last. And to add to the grim news, our state was also last for wage growth from 2010 to 2019. So, what action steps should we be thinking about?
First, successfully coping with the COVID-19 pandemic is priority job one and that includes widespread testing with rapid return of results in addition to adhering to the safety precautions now widely known to CT citizens. Second, we must focus on the CT economy, defined as the production and consumption of goods and services. As we look at the economy challenge, we must keep in mind several factors so that when a variety of solutions are considered, hopefully one but likely a few in the fashion of small sequential steps, they should benefit multiple constituencies. Take women, for example. The sectors of the economy that have been hit the hardest, resulting in the earlier job losses are dominated by women: health care, retail businesses and restaurants. The next wave began taking out government jobs, another sector in which women dominate. Then came the final blow, the closing of child-care centers and remote learning, leaving working mothers with simply too much to do, much more so than men. Another example is those with existing medical and financial challenges and drowning in medical debt. Their world has been turned upside down with the global pandemic making their problems worse. The solutions must be mindful of these fellow citizens.
I’m sickened by the fact we have talked so much about pension reform that I really don’t want to talk about it anymore, and we must do more than talk. With total unfunded pension liabilities totaling over $85 billion as of June 30, 2019, and according to Moody’s Analytics, CT has the “highest debt-obligation of any state allocating 31 percent of state revenue to bond, pension and retire health obligations,” we must address this issue. One brighter note worth mentioning is sales tax revenue. According to the Wall Street Journal, CT income tax receipts are running .3% ahead of last year in the fiscal year that started July 1, 2020. Sales tax revenue is up, too. However, we can’t bank on short-term successes like these, as they are sure to ebb and flow over time.
When it comes to the economy, our laser focus should be on job growth and maybe some small investments in areas to help that along and through the help of public/private partnerships. We need to move ahead on a series of changes, noting there is no silver bullet because economic factors are forever changing due to forces out of our control like capital markets innovation and monetary policy.
However, 60 years of life have taught me that superior execution of the fundamentals against a backdrop of fluid strategy always wins, albeit to varying degrees. We can’t promise more than we can deliver and must be pragmatic and transparent to the public about what really can be done when and how, all at very little cost, if any, if we prioritize job growth. The interesting part is that none of the effort requires starting over with new policy or beliefs by anyone; it will require self-discipline to focus on job growth until solutions are found. According to Manta, we have over 517,000 companies in our state; that’s 517,000 data points consisting of information, ideas, intellect and innovative thinking that surely hold the collective answers as to what initial and promising steps we can take to immediately improve. If there are ways to add jobs in a company, they are highly likely to know the key steps to get there.
It’s time to set a prioritized agenda and prepare it for public discussion. It must have alternatives to consider that are stress tested in the evaluation of each. Most importantly, those that craft the ideas to consider must be mindful that how they present the information can have material impact on the outcomes. Give us just the facts.
Starting now, we should right size government over time, working smartly with rigid deliberation in taking out the inefficiencies brought to light by the pandemic, make our tax rates competitive and focus on job growth, all the while being fair to all our citizens in the negotiations. If not, we will find ourselves in a continued economic stalemate, still dead last. We’ve hit bottom. Our time has run out.
