Saturday night’s Arch Street Teen Center Valentine’s Day dance for students in 10th, 11th and 12th grade was shut down after a number of teens arrived intoxicated. Tickets for the sold out dance cost $25. The event began at 8:30pm.

According to Greenwich Police Lt. Kraig Gray around 9:00pm units responded to the teen center on a report of an intoxicated juvenile.

“It quickly became apparent among the large crowd of teens that there were many intoxicated juveniles. More than the number of ambulances that could transport them,” said Lt. Kraig Gray at the Monday morning police briefing to reporters.

Lt. Gray said there were a total of 12 responding  units, three medic units and a total of nine police officers on scene.

“The juveniles were displaying signs of having consumed alcohol, including vomiting and disorientation,” Gray said. “At that point the decision was made by the teen center to cancel the party.”

Gray said a total of seven juveniles were transported by the medics to the hospital. “At the emergency room the teens were treated for severe alcohol intoxication,” Lt. Gray said.

Gray said parents also were called to pick up children when there weren’t enough ambulances.

“At these types of youth events, knowing that severe measures will be taken, the kids plan on becoming intoxicated before the event,” Gray said. “The kids know they cannot bring alcoholic beverages to the teen center.”
