After a long wait, the dredge of Mianus Channel has begun. On Wednesday it was possible to watch the work underway from the Dave Theis Bridge connecting Cos Cob to Riverside. According to Harbor Master Ian MacMillan, Patriot Marine is removing 6,000 cubic yards of “the worst of the material.”

MacMillan said that they’ll remove material to a depth of 7 ft and span a width of 100 ft.

“They want to put it in western Long Island Sound first so that they can bury it with the clear dredge they remove from the Mianus channel,” MacMillan said.

The federal navigation project (FNP) contract is with Patriot Marine, and they will remove 1,000 cubic yards a day, which MacMillan estimates will take two to three months, depending on weather conditions.
