A Bloc of Writers, a Greenwich-based writing, editing, and tutoring company, will sponsor a free lecture titled, “Getting In: What You Need to Know About College Admissions.” The lecture and a Q. and A. will take place on Saturday, May 5th from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. in the second-floor meeting room of the Greenwich Library.

“College admissions has gotten more complex and more competitive in recent years,” said Michele Turk, founder of A Bloc of Writers. “As a result, it’s also gotten more stressful for both students and their parents.”

Anjali Nadig, A Bloc of Writers’ college consultant, has helped hundreds of students gain entry to Ivy League schools and other top-ranked colleges and universities. Before joining A Bloc of Writers, she supervised 30 college consultants at the Bay Area’s largest educational consulting company.

Anjali will discuss the many things students can do to boost their odds of acceptance at a selective college. She will also offer advice and answer questions about formulating an admissions strategy (including Early Action and Early Decision applications), creating a balanced school list, and planning summer activities to make your college applications stand out. In addition, Michele Turk will give a presentation on the Common Application essay prompts and various supplemental essays.

This lecture is geared toward parents, but students are welcome to attend.

Attendees will learn exactly how much work is involved in the college application process and why’s it’s crucial to get a head start on college application essays. For example, some parents assume that writing college essays won’t be too challenging if their child has done well in school, but there is a huge difference between writing a high school English paper and writing a college application essay, said Turk. “Many students we work with have never written this type of narrative essay, so it’s not surprising to us that even top students struggle with the task,” she said.
