Alfonso Vairo

Alfonso Vairo passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday March 23, surrounded by his family and friends. He was 81.

Alfonso was born in Piaggine, Italy on December 1, 1936 to Pasquale and Maria Grazia Vairo.

At 19 years old, he emigrated to America in 1956 to join his father in the Belmont section of the Bronx. Alfonso worked various jobs, including in a Brooklyn shoe factory as well as a waiter at Mayer’s catering hall in the Bronx, while attending Marinello Beauty Culture School in Manhattan. He graduated in 1959 and began working at a local Beauty Salon where he met and styled the hair of his future wife, Rosamaria Russotto, who he married in 1962.

Also, in 1962, Alfonso, and his then-partner Sebastiano LaVerghetta, opened Aliano’s Beauty Salon in the Pelham Bay area of the Bronx. Alfonso became the sole owner of Aliano’s in 1983 until he semi-retired in 2012 after 50 years in business. Alfonso continued to work part-time at the salon through 2017. Alfonso has been a long-time member of the Pelham Bay Merchants Association.

Through the years, Alfonso served as an examiner for the New York State Department of Cosmetology Licensing, Treasurer, and was on the Board of Directors of Westchester Hairdressing Association.

He also served as a judge for hair styling competitions for many years. A resident of Greenwich since 1976, he is survived by his wife Rosamaria, his daughter, Maria Grazia and her husband, Giorgio Rossi of Rome, Italy, his son Pasquale and his wife Katherine with their children Olivia Rose and Elena Grazia of Old Greenwich and his son Vincent and his wife Janine with their children Jake and Alexandria of Darien.

He is also survived by his brothers Felice and Nicola and sister-in-law Angela Angeloni and brother-in-law, Crispino Russotto.

To honor his life, family and friends will gather Monday 4:00pm-8:00pm at Coxe & Graziano Funeral Home 134 Hamilton Ave in Greenwich.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, March 27 at 10:00 am at St. Paul Catholic Church in Greenwich. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Hawthorne.
