The Greenwich YMCA Marlins Diving Team was hard at work this summer training for the year’s biggest meets, and the hard work paid off. The Marlins – already decorated in 2017 as the YMCA Girls National Champs and the USA Diving Region 1 Overall and Women’s Team Champs – sent divers to both USA Diving’s National Championships and the Amateur Athletic Union’s Diving Nationals.
USA Diving, which is the national governing body for the Olympic sport of diving in the United States, held its 2017 National Championships at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, from July 29 – August 15.
Five of the Marlins’ top divers qualified for Nationals this year. In the Girls 11&U group, Avery Giese (Stamford, CT) placed 6th in the platform event finals; 8th in the 3-meter springboard event finals; and 3rd in the 1-meter springboard event finals.
In the Girls 12-13 group, Annie Bingle (Riverside, CT) placed 7th in the platform preliminary round; 6th in the 3-meter finals; and 13th in the 1-meter finals.
In the Girls 14-15 group, Madelyn Seltzer (Scarsdale, NY) placed 9th in the platform preliminary round and 31st in the 3-meter semi-finals.
In the Boys 16-18 group, James Hopper (Old Greenwich, CT) placed 2nd in the platform preliminary round and 21st in the 1-meter semi-finals. Finally, Carolina Sculti (Rye, NY) dove in both the Junior and the Senior events. Carolina, who will be representing the United States at the Pan-American Games in September, placed 7th in the 3-meter finals and 4th in the 1-meter finals for the Girls 16-18 group, and 8th in the Senior Women’s 3-meter finals.
These finishes earned the Marlins their 7th place team ranking among women’s diving teams in the United States this year.
The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) also holds a Diving Nationals every summer, and eight Marlins divers were among those competing in Huntersville, NC in late July.
In the Girls 9&U group, Grayson Ford (Greenwich, CT) finished 8th on 3-meter springboard and 3rd on 1-meter springboard. Jacob Winston (Old Greenwich, CT) finished 9th on 3-meter and 11th on 1-meter in the Boys 11-year old events. Myles Maxfield (Stamford, CT) finished 10th on 3-meter and 12th on 1-meter, also in the Boys 11-year old events. Veronica Fyfe (Hillsdale, NJ) finished 5th on 3-meter and 7th on 1-meter in the Girls 12-year old events. In the Girls 13-year old events, Sophia Blaine (Old Greenwich, CT) placed 11th on 3-meter and 30th on 1-meter. Also in the Girls 13-year old events, Francesca Kim (Greenwich, CT) placed 24th on 3-meter and 26th on 1-meter. In the Girls 14-year old events, Devon Ott (Rye, NY) placed 5th on 3-meter and 5th on 1-meter.
