Letter: Trapping is neither a scientifically justified nor a morally sound solution to wildlife conflicts

To the editor,

Trapping is neither a scientifically justified nor a morally sound solution to wildlife conflicts. Trapping coyotes is inhumane, expensive, and ineffective; it distracts us from other proven effective methods we can use to safely coexist with this ecologically important species.

Removing attractants (like accessible garbage), hazing (wear a whistle!), and responsible pet ownership is the commonsense solution to conflicts with wildlife.

Leghold traps have been banned by more than 88 nations.  The U.S., Canada, and Russia  continue to use them; over a handful of U.S. states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Jersey have banned or severely restricted their use:. Connecticut should do the same.

As said by the Dalai Lama, “Life is as dear to a mute creature as it is to man. Just as one wants happiness and fears pain, just as one wants to live and not die, so do other creatures.”
