The theme of Sandblast 2017 might have been, ‘What a difference a day makes.’ After a gray and cloudy Saturday, the rescheduled annual sand sculpture contest landed on the quintessential July beach day without a single cloud in the sky.
Some of the entries included a pair of hippos and a warning against feeding them. There were crocodiles and octopi, and castles with moats and tunnels.
The north and south concessions stands sported serious lines as hungry beach-goers craved fries, burgers and wraps.
Live music was provided by Jay and Ray who appealed the younger children. The event was a collaboration between Parks & Rec and Greenwich Arts Council. The sponsor was Meli-Melo.
As the tide turned around 2pm, the first “castle” to fall was a massive structure embellished with sea shells.
