Cardinal Critics Review “Whats Cooking” at Greenwich Point

This past week, in celebration of the unofficial start of summer, the Cardinal Critics visited Greenwich Point Park in Old Greenwich to sample what beach concession stands have in store for this summer.

Both of the concession stands at Greenwich Point are located steps away from the water’s edge and face east towards the Long Island Sound, in the perfect location to serve the crowds of hungry beach-goers in the summer months.

After an extensive rebuilding process following Superstorm Sandy, Carlos Hernandez and his restaurant, “Whats Cooking?” bid on and won the contract for both concessions stands before the 2016 season.

This year, Hernandez has big plans for the new north concession stand.

In addition to traditional snack bar fare, Hernandez plans to offer more formal, higher-end meals with a seafood theme fitting with the tranquil beach setting.

The shift is an attempt to draw a crowd looking for a dinner destination rather than just a snack bar for beach-goers.

Although this altered menu will not be offered every day, we are told it will feature items like lobster rolls, fish sandwiches and lobster salad, plus different specials every day.

On their visit, Spencer ordered a platter of chicken tenders and fries, Kai ordered a classic cheeseburger and Drew tried a “Bikini wrap” which featured grilled chicken, mozzarella cheese, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing.

Only minutes after ordering, our food was delivered right to our table as we watched the sailboats moving across the horizon.

Spencer loved his chicken tenders and marveled at how both the chicken and fries could both be so crispy while at the same time not being overdone.

Kai exclaimed, “the tenderness of the cheeseburger was unparalleled” and “the taste was angelic.”

Drew’s Bikini Wrap was “scrumptious” and “blew his high expectations out of the water (pun intended).”

All three critics paired their meal with a frozen drink.

Spencer found the chocolate milkshake to be the perfect match for the hot day, and both Kai and Drew enjoyed their Strawberry smoothies.

After their meal, the critics talked to their server Brian Hallock who said, “We have a little bit of everything for everyone.”

Brian also mentioned that as more schools let out and the weather becomes more consistent, the beach becomes a very popular destination for teenagers.
