Elfie Update: At Adopt a Dog, Severely Neglected Dog is Almost Unrecognizable

Elfie at Adopt-A-Dog became a celebrity a month ago when GFP intern Lauren Madigan-Sinclair shared her story of neglect and second chances.

Elfie arrived at Adopt A Dog in May after being severely neglected. She had been tied to a pole for most of her 3-1/2 years and had had at least two litters of puppies.

She had Demodectic Mange, a skin disease that can comes from a suppressed immune system, numerous tumors and tremendous discomfort.

In fact, when director of Adopt a Dog, Kristin Rice first saw Elfie herself she claimed to have never seen any dog in such bad shape in her 14 years with the organization. And that included a dog whose previous owners had thrown acid on their back, and a dog who had hot tar melted on its fur.

On June 22, Elfie’s transformation was remarkable.

She had six tumors removed and all were benign.

Her mange had mostly vanished and her beautiful brindle coat was flourishing.

In fact, Elfie’s entire disposition had brightened up. She gained 4 lbs since arriving ad Atopd-A-Dog. She enjoyed trotting around the play yard, venturing up and down ramps, earning treats and giving kisses.

Though Elfie is not yet ready for adoption as she is still recovering from her lifelong ordeal, GFP will continue to chronicle her story of love and second chances.
