On June 16 at about 11:30pm, Greenwich Police and EMS were stopped on East Putnam Ave near the intersection with Greenwich Ave assisting a drive with a diabetic emergency. Four Greenwich Police units and one GEMS unit were on the south side of the roadway, each with their emergency lights on.
While moving the patient’s car to a legal parking space on the north side of the road, two officers stepped into the roadway to ensure no traffic would impede the parking maneuver.
When the traffic signal at E. Putnam Ave and Mason St turned green, a 2011 black Volkswagen GFI accelerated at a high rate of speed toward the scene, but stopped abruptly near the officers.
When officers spoke to the driver, Pedro S. Garcia, 26, of 29 Emmalon Ave in White about his driving, he showed signs of being intoxicated. His speech was slow and deliberate and his eyes were watery. He had the smell of an alcoholic beverage on his breath and person.
Garcia submitted to a series of field sobriety tests which he subsequently failed. He was charged with DUI and Unsafe Movement. He was able to post his $220 bond and released. Garcia has a court date of June 30 at Stamford Superior Court.
