GHS Food Truck Fair for Kids in Crisis Benefits from Sunny Skies and SATs

fter Friday’s pouring rain, Saturday’s first ever “food truck fair” at Greenwich High School benefited from sunny skies, and student government leaders Jimmy Catalano, Emily Bass, Sophia Vittoria and Joe Magliocco beamed smiles as temps rose toward 70°.

“We decided on a food truck fair would be a good fundraiser because food trucks are becoming more and more popular,” said VP of Special Events Jimmy Catalano.

“We thought, ‘Why not bring food trucks to GHS?” he said, with a nod to lines at the food truck including families, students, and athletes who walked down from Cardinal stadium and adjacent fields.

“And the timing is great because the SAT is going on right now,”Jimmy said around noon. “They’ll be finished at 1:00pm. I remember coming out of the SAT and being famished.”

Jimmy said that this year, student government had been caught somewhat off guard when they learned there would not be no St. Baldrick’s Day head shaving event in March.

“We realized a little too late that there wasn’t someone taking over the fundraiser from Mr. Gavin, who is away at Western Middle School,” Jimmy said, adding that Kerry Gavin had for years run the St. Baldrick’s Day headshaving fundraiser.

“It was too late to step up and run the St. Baldrick’s event, so we came up with the food truck fair,” Jimmy said. “We hope it becomes an annual event.”

Kids in Crisis will receive a portion of proceeds from the fundraiser. Kids in Crisis provides around-the-clock assistance for children and families in need of counseling or prevention programs. The organization also provides shelter for infants, children and teens in need of a safer living environment.
