At Greenwich Academy, the Career Resource Center Gives Girls an Edge

Through the establishment of the Career Resource Center, Greenwich Academy offers students and alumnae the opportunity to draw on the school’s vast network to explore career opportunities, seek advice from industry experts, and secure internships.

Though Greenwich Academy’s advancement office has long been a networking hub for alumnae at all stages of their careers, the program was only formalized as the Career Resource Center in the fall of 2015.

In conjunction with the school’s Duff Center for STEM Initiatives and the Global Initiatives Program, the Career Resource Center has been successfully leveraging the tight-knit GA community to the benefit of students and alumnae.

Today, recent graduates call to apply for internships or connect with women working in fields of interest.

Alumnae with more established careers contact the office when they are considering new professional opportunities.

Even current juniors and seniors visit the office as they begin thinking about college and career.

Since the launch of the Career Resource Center, 175 students and alumnae have utilized the program, and those numbers are growing rapidly. Last summer more than 100 participants secured internships through the Career Resource Center, and more than 140 members of the Greenwich Academy community are currently serving as mentors, offering guidance as well as internship and shadowing opportunities.

“It’s our mission to help students pursue their passions both in and out of the classroom, and even after graduation. Being able to create these types of connections between students, alumnae and parents is one of the things that makes the Greenwich Academy community unique,” said Head of School Molly King.  “Through the Career Resource Center, our students are able to learn about career opportunities from those at the forefront of their professions.”

In addition to working with students and alumnae individually, the Career Resource Center has offered resume and cover letter writing workshops, panel discussions, and week long career exploration opportunities in finance, publishing and social media, medicine, marketing, STEM, and public relations.

During this summer’s Career Exploration Weeks, students will visit many notable organization including Hearst, Morgan Stanley and NYU Langone Medical Center.

“We’ve found that being involved in the Career Resource Center has been meaningful for all parties,” said Alumnae Director Megan Tyre. “Those offering career advice or internships are eager to give back to Greenwich Academy, and are impressed by the caliber of our students and alumnae. The students and young alums seeking guidance head into college and career with a deeper understanding of the opportunities available to them and valuable on-the-job experience.”
