Greenwich Police released information on stolen cars this week in an effort to remind residents to lock their cars and avoid leaving valuables inside them.

According to Lt. Kraig Gray, 14 motor vehicles were stolen from Greenwich since Jan 1.

“Our detectives are working with several other agencies in the area,”he said on Thursday during a regularly scheduled media briefing. “We’re operating under the theory that Greenwich, as well as many other affluent communities in Fairfield County, are being targeted for motor vehicle theft.”

“What links them all is that there are keys in the car,” he said of the recent stolen cars. “None have been stolen through force.”

Gray said the vehicles have been left unlocked with the keys within.

“Most of them are high end vehicles,” he said. “Some have been recovered, some have not.”

“The last three nights, three cars were stolen – all unlocked with keys in them,”he said.

The last cars to be stolen were a 2014 BMW X3 SUV, a 2015 Audi S8 Quattro, a 2010 Lexus SUV and a 2014 Mercedes SUV.

Lt Gray said the thefts have taken place in parts of town, though recently there has been a spate of thefts in the Mianus Park area.

“The easiest thing to do is lock your doors and take your keys out,” Gray said.
