Think twice before you scrape off your old beach sticker.
Especially if you rely on it to get into Holly Hill.
Since the Parks & Rec Dept announced they will not issue beach stickers this year – instead incorporating that information into the bar code on beach passes – residents who rely on the stickers for entrance to Holly Hill have been in a quandary.
“Don’t scrape off your old beach sticker,” advised Patrick Collins, Environmental Operations Manager at Holly Hill on Friday.
“We’ll honor last year’s beach stickers this year,” he said. “We’re modifying our signage over the next couple days to say that 2016 stickers will be accepted.”
For years, beach stickers have done double duty, giving access to both parks and the dump, where people can leave off garbage, construction debris, electronics, scrap metal, single stream recycling, and more.
Even residents who pay a hauler for their trash and recycling make separate trips to Holly Hill for the book swap and Goodwill truck. There also lesser known, but coveted perks like the packing popcorn shed and special container to dispose of American flags.
“We’re as busy here at Holly Hill as Tod’s Point,” Collins said. “We’ll get through this. It’s a matter of awareness.”
In the meantime, Collins and his assistant Nicole Tomczyk have been overwhelmed with requests for dump stickers.
“Nicole and I are staying late every day to keep up with the demand for stickers,” Collins said. “We’re processing about 50 applications a day.”
The stickers for access to Holly Hill are free to residents and afford access to the entire facility. “Come with your driver’s license and registration,” Collins said.
Collins said for the past several years, Holly Hill has maintained a ratio of 38 to 40 percent of single stream recycling to 60 percent trash. “We’re working to maintain that ratio of recycling to trash,” he said.
