Essay contest winners Katie Finnegan and Louisa Bjerke , both juniors at Greenwich High School, were honored at Thursday’s Board of Education meeting at Old Greenwich School.

Louisa Bjerke is the winner of the 2017 UConn Martin Luther King Junior Day Essay contest. Using the examples set by Martin Luther King Junior’s legacy and enlightened leadership, students were asked, in their 750 to 1,000 word essay, to discuss how they have engaged in creating change as a young person in order to reach their dream of bettering their community and society.

Louisa talked about making change for social justice through her work mentoring kids with the Junior League, as a study buddy for freshmen, and at the YWCA. Her essay was submitted through her AP US Government class with Mrs. Keller.

Junior Katie Finnegan was recognized as the 2016 American Freedom Essay Contest winner.

Entrants were asked to write a 300 word essay on how a particular American freedom makes people’s lives better.

Katie wrote about a woman’s right to choose whether or not to have an abortion.

She submitted her essay as an assignment through Aaron Hull’s honors civics class.
