The Daughters of the American Revolution recently had the honor of receiving a visit from Ann Turner Dillion, Secretary General of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).
According to a statement from the DAR, it has been over 70 years since a woman of this status within the NSDAR has visited Knapp Tavern at Putnam Cottage.
The Putnam Hill Chapter DAR hosted a reception for Mrs. Dillion in the Loft at Christ Church. Afterward, a number of members accompanied her as she walked across the street to have a docent led tour of the Tavern.
Mrs. Dillion, reminded the Putnam Hill Chapter DAR women in Greenwich that Constitution Hall, the NSDAR Headquarters, located in Washington, DC is the oldest and largest building in the world owned and operated by women.
The Putnam Hill Chapter DAR Secretary General was accompanied by Alice Ridgeway, who is the Connecticut State Regent.
Both attended the State Conference celebrating the 125 Anniversary of the Daughters of the American Revolution held in Wallingford, Connecticut. Mrs. Ridgeway spoke of the need for the State to reach out effectively to Chapters and Chapters to reach out effectively to their communities.
“In doing this, we feel that it is an opportunity for the Putnam Hill Chapter to educate our community about the founding objective of the DAR and that it is even more important, in this time of division within our country,” said the DAR in a written statement. “It is essential to communicate that it is the DAR’s duty to: perpetuate the memory and spirit of the men and women who achieved American Independence; to promote the development of an enlightened public opinion; and to foster patriotic citizenship.”
